How do I borrow library books?
Any student of KUSD may borrow books from Pleasant Prairie Elementary School Library-Media Center. Also, any Pleasant Prairie student may borrow materials from any other school in the Kenosha school district. The student needs only to bring their library card to their home school and request a hold be put on a book. The Library-Media Specialist will then electronically put a hold request at a particular school. Through the inter-district mail system, the material will be shipped to the requesting school.
What are my responsibilities when I checkout library materials?
When you check out materials, you will be allowed to keep them for one week with the chance to renew the item(s) for another week. Kindergarten and 1st graders may check out only one book and students in grades 2-5 may check out 2 items. If a student is working on a special project, more books may be checked out this includes research projects, Book-It, book reports etc. Students are expected to put books in their backpacks for traveling between school and home and once home to put the item(s) up where dogs, cats and little brothers and sisters can't reach them. Any damage done to a book will that deems it unusable will result in paying to replace the book.
All materials being returned are put into the book return slot
in the check out desk or if a library cart comes to your classroom, you are expected to place the book nicely on the cart shelf with the spine facing out and right side up.
How do I find books and things?
The entire collection of materials in the KUSD system is in a database on computers. You open up Safari. When the KUSD homepage opens then scroll down to elementary library and click on Pleasant Prairie. You can choose the type of search you want to do: title, author, subject or if you are not sure of any of the above information you can choose author words, title words, subject words or general words. Type in your word(s) and click on search
What if a book is not on the shelf or the library doesn't own it?
Check with the Library-Media Specialist at your home school and a hold may be put on the book you desire. If it is at another School.
How can I find out about Local History?
Open the KUSD homepage and find the button that tells 'About Kenosha' and click
What kinds of things do you have for children?
Pleasant Prairie Elementary Library has a book club once per month, it has an area where students can exchange paperback books of theirs that are in good condition for one or more of the ones in the case. Students in grades K-5 come in once per week for 1/2 hr. of a library program of a story and a benchmark from Information Literacy.
Students in grades 2-5 are free to come to the library at any time.
Can I check out music or videos?
We do have a selection of videos for students to check out and it all depends on the teacher's preference. We have no music to be checked out.
How can I reserve a room in the Library?
If you belong to a group that wants to use the library, first check with Mr. Elsen, then check with the Library-Media Specialist, Mrs. Dawson, and finally fill out a room reservation form.
If a book is damaged slightly, a fine of $.25 or $.50 will be assessed the student. If the book is unusable then the student will need to pay the cost of the book. Arrangements can be made to substitute one of your books for one of the libraries. If some cases, a student can work off the fine.
How can I make donations to the library?
If you have any children's books that you want to dispose of, please bring them to school. I will look through them and choose ones that I would like to add to the library collection, I will then give appropriate ones to various teachers for use in the classrooms and the remainder I will hand out to the students as they check out books.
The library does have magazines but the current issue, the one that is in the magazine binder, may not be checked out until the next issue arrives.
